Human Rights Campaign, Vice President, Communications and Marketing

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) seeks a senior communications and marketing specialist to direct all of HRC's communications and marketing needs. Working closely with the senior leadership, this person will help design, shape and execute a comprehensive, multi-faceted communications and marketing program that maintains and augments HRC and the HRC Foundation’s position as the leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization in America. The individual assuming this position will be responsible for developing and executing high-impact creative ideas designed to achieve effective and strategic long-term positioning and messaging. This executive will manage HRC communications and marketing activities, including litigation communications, issues management, brand development, media relations, advertising, collateral development, web communications and social media campaigns, crisis and litigation communications, and internal communications. The incumbent will be responsible for generating strong positive press coverage and will oversees the quality and consistency of message in all organizational materials including news releases, website, quarterly magazine, newsletters, advertising and marketing collateral materials. The successful candidate must have the ability to manage information in a highly professional manner, frame issues for print, television and web -- and present such stories. This individual will also direct a team of media and marketing professionals, as well as a team of publications specialists.

Position Responsibilities:

Specific requirements of the position are as follows:

  • Reporting directly to the President, and as a member of the senior management team, the Vice President of Communications & Marketing will work closely with the HRC leadership team to shape strategies, messages and priorities;
  • The incumbent must be responsive to the judgment of the President and be able to prioritize tasks;
  • This individual must be able to execute rapidly in the short run while developing HRC's communications strategies for the long run;
  • The incumbent will work to heighten the organization’s visibility and ensure a consistent message with the national media and general public.
  • The incumbent must be a self-directed/self–starter individual with the ability to manage time and prioritize initiatives/ activities. Experience working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment preferred.
  • The incumbent must have experience in helping to shape and understand results of professional research and polling.

Position Qualifications:

  • The candidate will have experience managing an internal PR team, including developing and mentoring individuals. The incumbent will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with personnel issues and interact internally with senior management and externally with various HRC constituencies.
  • This professional must have a minimum of ten years experience in media relations and communications and excellent and well-established media relationships. The incumbent will have strong experience developing and executing strategic PR plans and initiatives as well as hands on experience managing and executing media relations. People without extensive media relations experience need not apply.
  • Significant electoral, legislative and crisis communications experience required.
  • The successful candidate must have experience in developing and rolling out public education campaigns – in print, on air and via the Web.
  • The incumbent should also have management experience leading a team of public relations and marketing professionals.
  • Degree in journalism or public relations preferred. Excellent organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills are required. The incumbent must be high-energy and have the ability to work in a dynamic, high-pressure and often reactive environment and be able to balance input and react quickly and efficiently. Strong oral and written communications skills are a must.
